#174 Experience of a Professional Dancer in Singapore

Profession: Professional Dancer

Experience: Over 6 years

Location: Singapore

My Personal Experience:

As a child, I was always drawn to the rhythm of life. From a young age, I found myself tapping my feet to the beat of every song, and little did I know that this would shape my entire career. My journey as a professional dancer in the vibrant city of Singapore has been nothing short of exhilarating.

The Hard part I feel about this profession as per my experience till now:

Becoming a professional dancer is like embarking on a thrilling yet challenging adventure. The path to success is not always a graceful one, and the initial struggle to prove your worth can feel like a dance with uncertainty. Strictly professionals know that the road to recognition is paved with intense training, countless auditions, and facing rejection more often than not. Despite the glitz and glamour that the audience sees, the life of a professional dancer involves endless hours of practice, enduring physical strains, and pushing the boundaries of creativity.

Things I find interesting or feel “happy” about this profession are:

Amidst sweat and hard work, there are moments of pure magic that make every sacrifice worthwhile. Each performance feels like a celebration of the human body’s capabilities and a tribute to the art form. As strictly come dancing dancers, we have the privilege of using our bodies to tell stories that transcend language and culture. The stage becomes our canvas, and the applause becomes our motivation. The joy of mastering a challenging routine or collaborating with fellow dancers to create something breathtaking is unparalleled.

Pros And Cons I feel about this profession:

Pros:

  • Creativity Unleashed: The world of dance is a realm where creativity knows no bounds. As strictly professional dancers, we have the freedom to express emotions and narratives through movement, creating a powerful connection with our audience.
  • Physical and Mental Discipline: Dancing demands discipline and dedication. This profession keeps us physically fit while nurturing mental resilience. The constant strive for perfection molds us into strong individuals.
  • Global Community: The dance community is a tightly-knit family that extends beyond borders. We connect with fellow dancers, choreographers, and instructors from around the world, enriching our perspective.

Cons:

  • Uncertain Income: The life of a professional dancer can be financially uncertain, especially for those starting. Gigs may not always be consistent, leading to financial instability.
  • Physical Strain: The rigorous training and performances can take a toll on the body. Injuries are an inevitable part of this profession and can sometimes hinder our career trajectory.
  • Highly Competitive: The dance industry is highly competitive. Auditions can be cutthroat, and standing out in a sea of talent requires exceptional skills and resilience.
