#35 Experience Of A Librarian

Profession: Librarian

Experience: 10 years

Location: New Delhi, India

My Personal Experience:

As a librarian, I have always been passionate about books and reading. My job involves managing a library’s collection, assisting users in finding resources, and organizing various events to promote reading and literacy. Over the past 10 years, I have seen the role of a librarian evolve with the changing times.

The Hard part I feel about this profession as per my experience till now is:

One of the hardest parts of being a librarian is adapting to the digital age while still preserving the essence of a physical library. The proliferation of e-books and online resources has challenged the traditional concept of a library. It can be challenging to balance the needs of users who prefer physical books with those who prefer digital resources. Additionally, with the pandemic, the role of a librarian has shifted towards online engagement and virtual events.

Things one might find interesting or feel “happy” about this profession are:

As a librarian, I love the fact that I get to be surrounded by books and reading every day. It’s incredibly fulfilling to be able to connect people with resources that they find valuable, whether it’s a book that sparks a new interest or an article that helps them in their research. Additionally, librarianship is a profession that promotes community engagement and lifelong learning.

Pros I feel about this profession are :

One of the biggest pros of being a librarian is the sense of fulfillment that comes with promoting literacy and lifelong learning. Libraries are one of the few places that provide free access to a wealth of knowledge and resources, and as a librarian, I get to play a crucial role in ensuring that these resources are available to everyone. Additionally, librarianship is a versatile profession that allows for opportunities to specialize in different areas such as children’s services, archives, or research.

Cons you feel about this profession are :

One of the biggest cons of being a librarian is the misconception that libraries are becoming obsolete. While the role of libraries has evolved with technology, they remain relevant and valuable resources for the community. Additionally, library budgets are often subject to cuts, which can make it challenging to provide the resources and services that users need.

What are your suggestions for those who would like to make a career in this profession?

For those who are interested in pursuing a career in librarianship, my advice would be to stay up-to-date with current trends in technology and digital resources while also emphasizing the value of a physical library. Additionally, networking with other librarians and participating in professional development opportunities can provide valuable insights and connections in the field. Above all, a love of books and reading and a commitment to promoting literacy and lifelong learning are essential qualities for success in librarianship.
